A Stress-Free Christmas Season

December 22, 2017 | Nancy Fish

When I think of the Christmas season, several thoughts instantly go through my mind. First, I think of all the beautiful decorating that must be done, the holiday cookies to be made (and eaten of course) and let’s not forget all the shopping.  In the past, I have found that this excitement of Christmas wears off as my to-do list becomes more overwhelming than exciting. I become tired and like all the cranky people I’ve encountered shopping, trying to find that “perfect” gift.  In a recent message, Pastor Steve asked, “Why am I so surprised that Christmas is here, it is on the same day every year—December 25,” and I can’t agree more!  Why do I leave everything to the last minute? Why do I get so caught up in the craziness that I forget about the real reason I should be celebrating Christmas—Jesus?

As I think of all the worldly things on my list that I believe I must get done, I realize that I have misplaced my focus. As a child, I remember how carefree the Christmas season was. Our biggest stress was waiting until Christmas morning to unwrap presents. When, as adults, did we lose the excitement for all the hope that the Christmas season can offer?

Sometimes I feel like Charlie Brown in “The Charlie Brown Christmas” movie when he says, “Everything I do turns into a disaster. I guess I really don't know what Christmas is all about. Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?“ Then Linus begins to tell us the story of how Christ was born. “For behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.' That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown!”

When I hear the amazing story of why Jesus was born, it reminds me of what God sacrificed for us. This is the greatest gift we as sinful and broken people (who can sometimes be cranky shoppers during the Christmas season), could ever receive. Why do we think that running from store to store is worth all the hassles and stress? Not to mention that most of those gifts will soon be broken, outdated and forever forgotten.  God’s gift to us, Jesus, came into this world in a stable and was laid to rest in a manger, none of which was shiny and new. No elaborate wrapping paper, fancy boxes, or sparkling bows. Unlike the gifts that become broken and forgotten, we should never get tired of hearing about that amazing gift God gave us all those years ago!

There is nothing more calming or peaceful than watching a newborn baby wrapped in swaddling clothes sleeping peacefully. This is how Jesus came into this chaotic world. Christmas can be such a simple message, so why do we make it so complicated? Why do we—no why do I—think all the bright lights and glittery decorations will make my Christmas better when all I need to do is focus on the one true Savior, Jesus Christ. By doing so I can have a peaceful spirit. I can then share with others what a true stress-free Christmas is all about—our Savior Jesus Christ!

Peace will not just happen. We, as a body of believers, must make Jesus a priority. Some practical things come to mind when I think about what it means to take action in finding peace: spend time in prayer, constantly be in The Word, and keep your focus on Jesus!  When we do these things, I truly believe that we will be blessed with the peace and joy of the true Christmas season!

Isaiah 9:6, “For a child is born, to us, a son is given, the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
