Opinions Are Like Noses
August 25, 2025 | Russ Moe
Ever heard this one? “Opinions are like noses—everybody’s got one, and most of them have a couple of holes in them.”
We’re living in the age of opinion—hot takes, think pieces, and comment sections deeper than the Mariana Trench. The trouble is, most of what passes for counsel today is just that: opinion. And while everyone’s entitled to one, not all of them are worth following—especially when they lead us off a cliff with great confidence and excellent grammar.
Pride has this idea that the secrets of life are something we’ll eventually figure out—as if God left behind a Rubik’s Cube and said, “Good luck!” But if that were true, the mind would be our flashlight. Scripture says it’s more like a flickering candle in a wind tunnel:
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12).
That’s not just a warning—it’s a diagnosis. The natural mind is in a fallen condition, not a factory default one.
The Way Things Really Work
“The Lord by wisdom founded the earth” (Proverbs 3:19).
Not chaos. Not cosmic luck. God. He built the universe with intention, not impulse, using wisdom as His blueprint. That means everything—everything—operates according to divine principles. That’s not superstition. That’s how reality works.
So what is wisdom?
Wisdom is knowing how things are designed to work.
Being wise is living in harmony with those ways.
God Himself says, “My ways are not your ways… they are higher” (Isaiah 55:8–9). Which means:
- We usually guess wrong.
- We lean on what feels right.
- We end up groping through life like we’re trying to find the bathroom light switch at 2:00 a.m.
Gravity Doesn’t Care About Your Opinion
Take gravity. It doesn’t need your vote or approval. It just is. You’re wise to cooperate with it. Try ignoring it, and you’ll find out the hard way how non-negotiable it is.
The Wright Brothers changed the world not because they rebelled against gravity, but because they respected it and worked with it. They learned how flight really works—lift, drag, thrust, design. Everyone else? Crash and burn.
But this isn't just about physics. Life has principles just as fixed:
- Design
- Ownership
- Responsibility
- Morality
- Authority
- Purpose
- Success
Ignore them, and life becomes a series of frustrating crashes. Align with them, and you may just find yourself flying higher than you imagined.
The Source of Real Success
So what does wise counsel do?
It traces the conflict back to the principle being violated.
Then it brings us back into harmony with God’s wisdom—and with God Himself.
That’s why the Bible says:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without finding fault” (James 1:5).
But here’s the catch: You can’t plug into God’s wisdom while your natural mind is still hogging the outlet. You’ve got to unplug yourself and plug into Him. He’s the source of clarity, peace, and insight.
God’s wisdom is not a theory. It’s a power supply.
And wise counsel—real wise counsel—draws from it.
Compared to that, most opinions are like crooked arrows: they may get launched with enthusiasm, but they’re not hitting anything worthwhile.
Just ask Job. His friends had plenty of advice. God had to clear His throat and straighten them all out.
Bottom Line
Don’t follow every nose.
Don't treat opinions like wisdom.
And don’t ignore the One who built the system.

He’s already drawn up the plans.
