Uganda January 2018 Update #2

January 16, 2018

I am beyond blessed to be in Uganda!!! My daughter, Katie Gisi (who has been serving as a missionary in Uganda these last four months), was waiting for us at the airport when we arrived, along with her Uganda family. It’s been a long four months since she left, and it was great to see and hug her!

Katie and I spent some time in the fabric market on Monday, purchasing traditional African fabric that will be used at Art for the Heart of Africa. I also experienced my first Boda (motorcycle taxi) ride; I must admit, I was a little frightened at first!

Today was the first day for the whole team with the Dreamland at the refugee camp. We headed out around 9 am and arrived shortly after 10:30 am. It was a long, hot, dusty ride, but oh, so worth it! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when we got there, and I found myself with tears in my eyes to see the children and their love for everyone; they each greeted us with a handshake and a “welcome.” The children immediately remembered the familiar faces of Katie and Lance, and we were so excited to see everyone. I finally got to meet the faces in our pictures we purchased from Art For The Heart Of Africa.

On the ride there, I asked God to use me however He wanted to as I wasn’t sure what He wanted to do. Kari, CarolAnn, and I found ourselves painting fingernails, jumping rope (wow, haven’t done that in a while), and even getting our hair braided. Kenny played soccer, Katie spent time connecting and talking with the older girls, and Lance spent time talking and hanging out with the older boys. I found myself particularly connecting with the “little ones.” I love babies and “little ones” and loved every minute of being able to cuddle and hold them on my lap.

After having lunch, everyone gathered together and sang a couple of songs, and Lance led a devotion from 1 Timothy 4:12 that says, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young…” He encouraged the kids that it doesn’t matter what your age is, God wants to have a relationship with you. We then prayed and went off to spending time just hanging out with the kids, building relationships, and simply loving them.

Today was an amazing day for me and the rest of the team. Those children certainly have a part of my heart now! We are so thankful for everyone that is lifting up the team in prayer.
