I Am _____.

November 6, 2018 | Pastor Steve Huffman

I am just returning from an event where I had to introduce myself a number of times.  “I’m Steve Huffman, one of the pastors at the Vineyard Church”. My title only shares a fraction of who I really am. I have other titles – dad, husband, friend…

I also have emotions that fill in the “I am _____.” I can be happy, sad, lonely, exhausted, overwhelmed; these titles / emotions try to define who I am in the moment or during a season, but oftentimes these titles and emotions can end up being lies that rarely help me see the truth in the situation.

When I’m facing challenges, I am learning the power of declaring God’s truth to realign with who I truly am. Declaring God’s truth “out loud” over challenges is incredibly powerful in overcoming lies where emotions can pull us away from Truth.

Try declaring these truths over who you really are during a challenging season:

  • I am a son / daughter of God (John 1:12)
  • I am more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37)
  • I am not helpless (Philippians 4:13)
  • I am an overcomer (1 John 4:4)
  • I am chosen and dearly loved (Ephesians 1:4, Colossians 3:12)
  • I am not alone (Hebrews 13:5)
  • I am built with a purpose (Ephesians 1:9 & 3:11)
  • I am forgiven (Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14)

There is incredible power in declaring God’s truth over who you truly are instead of getting lost in insufficient titles or overwhelming emotions. God’s truth never fails! His love is always enough and can reset the direction of a season that is challenging.
